CARLSON CABANA

Working closely with Brian Howard, design principal at HF:architecture, AJ learned to appreciate Brian’s minimal Scandinavian design approach. His attitude toward simple detailing, clean lines, sustainability and functionality left a lasting impression. These guiding principles have influenced and continue to challenge our thinking at OOMBRA.

CARLSON RESIDENCE

While at HF:architecture, AJ of OOMBRA worked on a number of single family homes. This house is located off the banks of the Huron River in Ann Arbor, MI. Here, the main drivers of the design parti are the most simple expressions of structure becoming finish material, pulling the outdoor environment completely through the home with expansive glass openings. The home was entirely renovated from its one-story cape cod saltbox beginnings into a two-story post and beam, warm, modern home with unobstructed views to the river.

The project created valuable additional retail space by “re-aligning” the meandering Avenue D aisle and by relocating much of the cold storage to the basement. These two moves freed space for new vendors and allowed for a large portion of the floor area to be allocated for new toilet rooms. Partner Michael Brahler was project architect and manager of this project while with Friday Architects.
