PROJECT: ZENPOINTE EV CHARGING HUB
STATUS: ONGOING
TYPE: ELECTRIC CAR CHARGING, RETAIL, SLEEPING PODS, FITNESS, DOG PARK
AWARDS: 2022 AIA PHILADELPHIA MERIT AWARD UNBUILT, 2023 AIA PENNSYLVANIA MERIT AWARD UNBUILT
PROJECT DESCRIPTION:
ZenPointe EV Charging Hub reimagines the highway rest stop for the electric vehicle era. As charging infrastructure expands across the United States, the time drivers spend waiting for their vehicles to recharge creates an opportunity to rethink roadside travel as something more comfortable, useful, and restorative.
Rather than treating charging as a purely technical transaction, ZenPointe combines fast EV charging with hospitality, wellness, retail, and landscape. Drivers can work over high-speed Wi-Fi, grab sustainably sourced coffee, rest in a sleeping pod, exercise, walk a dog, or spend time in shaded green space while their vehicle charges.
The project integrates sustainable strategies into the architecture of the hub itself. Solar canopies generate clean energy, rainwater harvesting supports water conservation, and efficient building systems reduce operating demand. The charging areas, amenities, and landscape are organized as a connected environment, creating a rest stop that supports both practical travel needs and a more humane experience of waiting.
As EV range and charging speeds continue to improve, projects like ZenPointe point toward a new model for transportation infrastructure: one that is convenient, sustainable, and enjoyable. The hub transforms the necessary pause of charging into a destination within the journey, setting a higher standard for the future of electric mobility.
