PLAYSPACE DIAGRAM

PROJECT: DISCOVERY PARK
LOCATION: POTTSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA
STATUS: CONSTRUCTION - COMPLETION FALL2023
TYPE: INTERACTIVE PARK FOR CHILDREN
The City of Pottsville has had its share of many great leaders. Mayors who have led the community through 225 years of history. One of the most prolific was Terrence P. Reiley. A young man with the drive, desire and determination to make this community and his life memorable. At a young age, Terry accomplished a great deal. After graduating from Pottsville Area High School in 1984, he earned a master's degree in civil engineering from Villanova University and a law degree from Widener University. He was also a husband and father of two daughters. As the youngest elected mayor of Pottsville, Terry was known for his bipartisan leadership, and effective management of the City. In addition, he developed many citywide initiatives and goals that have made a positive and lasting impression of the City he loved. Tragically, Terry was diagnosed with Leukemia in 1995. After a hard-fought battle, he passed away in 1997. Terry left one goal that was not realized. That is Discovery Park. The concept of Discovery Park was to utilize a vacant parcel of land in the downtown located at 301 West Market Street, across from the City Library and transform that parcel into a park that would offer residents and children with the opportunity to read, learn, play, relax and socialize in a setting, specially designed to encourage development and community involvement. A Story Area, Whispering Dish, Kugel Sculpture with departed firefighters’ names, Sundial, Compass, and music component is planned. Discovery Park will foster positive relationships with children, parents, caretakers and learning. The park also includes a mural of local firefighters in a further effort to honor their service and promote volunteerism. An interactive sustainability demonstration area will be wired to an onsite wind turbine and solar panels illustrating the energy gained versus the energy consumed by common appliances. This new open space in the downtown neighborhood will be a destination for people and children to gather around their shared interests in low-tech communication, learn about sustainability and strengthen their sense of community.
