DREXEL UNIVERSITY SQUASH CENTER - A renovation to an existing athletic center

Drexel University wanted to grow their Varsity Squash Team. Unfortunately, their facilities were holding them back. The existing dark, lifeless, 7-court handball area was reimagined into a state-of-the-art, 5-court squash center meeting all international standards of the World Squash Association. Investigations into new opportunities for viewing and public circulation around and above the playing courts was primary to the design solution. The existing conditions were leveraged by exposing the beautifully muscular concrete coffered ceiling and specifying pretty but low maintenance materials throughout. The project won a Philadelphia Chapter AIA Award in 2013. While with Friday Architects, Michael of OOMBRA was the lead designer, architect and project manager from inception through construction administration.
