AVON OLD FARMS SCHOOL - Student center and athletics complex

Avon Old Farms School was founded in 1918 by one of America's first licensed female architects, Theodate Pope Riddle. Riddle designed and supervised the building of the gorgeous, Arts and Craft campus between 1918 and 1927. Working in tandem with Jeffrey Millman, Michael of OOMBRA was charged with the creation of a new student center and athletic complex of a field house, squash courts, fitness, wrestling room, administration offices and accommodations for a future natatorium. These are large, big-box programs, inherently, out of scale with the existing context. Sensitive placement of building masses to complete the new Village Green and the selection of appropriate materials was key to making this a successful project.
